Chapter Two
Luka
A faint pop song from the nineties was playing over the speakers at the Piggly Wiggly. Luka was in the cereal section. He was dressed in a Piggly Wiggly apron and was stocking the generic version of Frosted Flakes when his boss came to speak with him.
“Delivery. Jolene Leggitt.”
The name brought a groan out of Luka. “Bill, com’on. Can’t Pete do it?”
“Pete’s got an appointment today. I let him leave early. I ain’t got no one else,” said Bill.
Luka let out a very heavy sigh, and reluctantly said, “Alright. Do I at least got time to finish up here?”
“Sure. Cindy’s gatherin’ up her order right now. Gonna take her a few minutes. It’s a big one.”
Luka gave a nod of his head, and watched as Bill disappeared from the aisle. Why Jolene? Of all people? And why did Pete need to have an appointment today?! Bill knew that he and Jolene had history. They had been dating a few months back and they didn’t exactly break up on good terms. He vividly remembered her throwing a beer can at his head on the way out of her house. She accused him of cheating on her with Mary Lou. He hadn’t. Not really.
Maybe there was some flirting… But nothing more than that. Jolene would hear none of it. She was sure he was cheating on her, and it wasn’t the first time the two of them had broken up. Their history together went all the way back to high school. They’d been dating on and off for years. They’d fight, break up, get back together, then start fighting again. It was a vicious cycle.
Luka didn’t exactly have feelings for her. It wasn’t his heart that kept him going back to her. It was lust. She had an amazing rack and she was wild in bed. When they had sex, everything was great. But they couldn’t have sex all the time, and that’s where they didn’t get along.
He wasn’t sure what it would be like, seeing her again now. Was she still going to be pissed at him? It was possible. Yet what choice did he have? The Piggly Wiggly only had two delivery guys, and he was the only one working today.
Another sigh escaped him, as he finished stocking the cereal. By the time he made his way to the delivery counter, Cindy had gathered all of Jolene’s groceries. He loaded the groceries into his SUV, and didn’t bother looking up directions on his GPS. He knew her address by heart.
When he pulled into her driveway, he sat there, hesitating. Maybe he could drop the groceries off on her porch, then call her as he was driving away? That would definitely be easier than facing her. Before he could finish that thought, she was opening her front door and stepping out onto the porch.
Jolene had bleach blonde hair that was obviously dyed. She was curvy with big hips and thighs, and had a perfect pair of breasts. 36Cs to be exact. A detail he made sure to remember. She was dressed in a tank top that hugged her thin waist and put those babies on display. She wore a pair of short shorts to go along with the tank. The kind of shorts that he was sure were riding up her ass.
Jolene never had a problem showing off her body. In high school, she had been labeled as trashy. Luka didn’t mind. He’d been called trashy before too.
“Ain’t you a sight for sore eyes,” Jolene said, walking down the stairs of her porch. She wasn’t wearing any shoes. Not that Luka was looking at her feet. “Didn’t know they’d be sending you.”
“Pete woulda come but he was out today,” Luka said as he pushed his door open. He was unsure how to take this happy greeting. He expected some bitterness from her. Maybe even a few curse words.
“Yeah? Well I’m glad it was you instead,” said Jolene. She stopped in front of him once he was out of the car. At 6’3”, he was used to towering over girls, but Jolene was tall herself and came up all the way to his nose.
“Not gonna lie, that comes as a surprise,” he admitted. He looked down at her, and his gaze continued lower, drawn to her cleavage. He couldn’t stop himself. Her boobs were barely held in by that low cut tank top.
“Aww, I know we split on bad terms but I was at the salon the other day, and Mary swore to me that nothin’ happened between you two. I guess I overreacted…” Jolene looked up at him with her big doe eyes. They were blue and bright, and when she paired them with a slight pucker, she made herself look innocent and sweet as candy.
Luka knew the truth. She was far from sweet or innocent. But he guessed he’d take this reaction over her yelling and screaming at him. “I tried to tell ya but you was havin’ none of it.”
“I know, I know… I’m sorry, baby. I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately. About us.” Jolene lifted a hand to touch the side of his bearded face. The action felt nice, though he knew he shouldn’t get involved with her again. There was a reason they never worked out.
“Yeah… Well, I uh, I got your groceries,” he said, pulling away from her. He walked around to the back of his SUV and opened the door. “You havin’ a party or something?”
“Yeah, actually, a barbeque this weekend. You think you’d wanna come?” she asked, following him around the vehicle.
“I don’t know,” Luka said. “You wanna get the door for me?”
“Sure thing,” she replied, then trotted back towards her porch. The way she bounded off made those tits of hers bounce along with each step. Damn, was she even wearing a bra?
She held the door open for him as he unloaded all the groceries and dropped them off on her kitchen counter. It took several trips before he was finally finished. Standing in her kitchen, he pulled off his hat and ran a hand through his sweaty hair. It was already starting to get hot out. Summer was beginning to move in.
“Here you go. I put a little extra in, for your tip,” Jolene spoke with a sweet smile. She handed him a wad of cash, which he took and counted. The tip she gave him was $10. Not bad.
He shoved the cash into his pocket and started for the door. “Thanks, Jo. I guess I’ll be seeing ya.”
“Wait, you’re leavin’ already?” Jolene said quickly, trailing after him.
“Yeah, I gotta get back to the store.” Before he reached the front door, Jolene slipped in front of him to block his way.
“But it’s been so long since we’ve seen each other… I was kinda wonderin’, if maybe you’d… wanna fool around? For old time’s sake?” As she spoke to him, she took a hold of the bottom of her tank top. She wringed the fabric in her hands, playing with it, lifting it just a bit to show off some of her belly. It was a subtle tease. One that definitely caught his attention.
“Uhh… I don’t… You know I got work…” he said, struggling to find an excuse. His head knew that he should turn her down but his dick, well his dick had other ideas.
“Com’on, haven’t you missed me too?” Jolene asked, with those big blue eyes and her perfect lashes. She fluttered them at him, stepping closer, to where their bodies were almost touching. His eyes again went to her cleavage without even thinking about it. “You know you want to…”
Luka was quiet for a moment, trying to fight the battle between his brain and his dick, but like so many times in his life, his dick came out the winner.
“Fuck it.”
What’s one more mistake? Jolene was offering, and it wasn’t like he hadn’t already been there countless times before. He let her lead him off to her bedroom, and their romp in the sack was just as wild and fun as always. He left her place feeling pretty damn satisfied.
As he was driving back to work, he thought about the barbeque she was having this weekend. He told her he’d probably stop by. Should he consider getting back with her? They kept coming back to each other for a reason. Then again, they kept breaking up for a reason too. It was a tough choice. One thing weighing in her favor, though, was that she sure did know how to keep a man happy in the bedroom.
He was nearly back to work when he got a phone call. It wasn’t Jolene. It was his dad.
“Hey, Luka. You think you could pick up Juneberry from school for us this evening?”
“Yeah, sure,” Luka agreed, but he immediately wondered if he should be concerned. It wasn’t usual for him to get Juneberry from school. “What’s going on?”
“It’s nothin’ serious. We got a sick calf on our hands. We couldn’t get a vet to come out, so we gotta take her in.”
“Ah, yeah, that’s fine. I’ll pick her up.”
“Thanks, son.”
Luka exchanged goodbyes with his dad and hung up. He was glad it was nothing to worry about. He glanced at the clock as he parked at the grocery store and saw he had a couple hours left.
The rest of the work day went by smoothly. When it came time to leave, he had one last delivery to drop off, but he asked Bill if he could swing by to get Juneberry first. Bill was okay with that. He had always been a lenient boss. Made it easy to work for him.
When Luka pulled into the high school parking lot, his niece was standing on the curb with a few other kids. Juneberry was 15 years old and his parents were raising her. His older sister, Bethany, decided she didn’t want the responsibility of a child. Luka hadn’t seen his sister for a few years, but Juneberry, he spent a lot of time with. In a way, she was more like a little sister to him than a niece.
“Hey kiddo!” he called to her from the window of his Jeep.
Juneberry looked in the direction of his voice and a cheerful smile graced her face. She was a pretty girl. It was hard for Luka to accept that she was growing up. He still remembered when she was waddling around his parents’ house in just a diaper. Now she was tall with a blossoming figure. He was sure the boys were flocking all over her. They just better not flock too hard, if they knew what was good for them.
“Hey, I didn’t know you was picking me up today!” she said, pulling the door open and plopping down in the passenger’s seat. She put her binder and some books in her lap, then moved her purse to rest on top of them.
“Yeah, Mom and Dad are busy with a sick calf,” he said. “Seat belt.”
Juneberry pulled the seat belt over herself and clicked it into place. “Oh yeah. They were hopin’ she’d get better overnight. I guess not.”
“I’m sure she’ll be fine. You wanna go with me to drop off these groceries?” he asked, jutting a thumb towards the back of his car.
“Yeah, alright,” she agreed. “But can we pick up some food? I’m starving.”
“Food, it is. The usual?”
“Yep!”
Luka grinned as he drove them off in the direction of Snappy’s Drive-In. It was an old fashioned drive-in restaurant where they skated your order to your car on trays. They had the best milkshakes in town, and of course they each had to order one to go along with their hamburgers and fries. He got strawberry, while she got orange creamsicle.
“So, how’s school going?” he asked, while chewing a big bite of his hamburger.
Juneberry swallowed her bite down before she replied. “It’s good. Boring. But I got an A in Agriculture.”
“Nice. Though Ag is one of the easier classes,” he teased, and Juneberry narrowed her eyes at him.
“I got an A in math too, if you must know, mister smartass,” she teased him right back.
Luka laughed then took a sip of his delicious milkshake. “Well you’re doin’ better than me. I cheated my way through math class.”
“Seriously?”
“Oh yeah. Numbers have always went over my head,” said Luka. “But don’t you tell on me. As far as Mom and Dad know, I’m a math scholar.”
Juneberry laughed and shook her head in disbelief. “I have a hard time believing that.”
“Alright. They don’t think I’m a scholar but they don’t know I cheated.”
Juneberry grinned before taking a sip of her own milkshake. The two of them continued to talk about school and such as they finished their meal. When they were done, Luka completed the grocery delivery. He stopped by Ollie’s house, the local barber, and Juneberry sat in the car, playing on her phone, while he carried the groceries inside.
As he was getting back into the driver’s seat, Juneberry asked, “Hey, you think I could come over to your place a while?”
Luka had to smile. He liked the sound of having his niece over. He was never a lonely person. He was social. He had a lot of friends, and family, and he always found things to do. But Juneberry had only seen his new place once since he moved in, and the two of them always had fun together.
“Yeah, sure. Mindy’ll be happy to see you,” he replied. His Collie was happy to see anyone, but she always had a soft spot for Juneberry. Maybe because Juneberry had been with him when he picked her out.
“Oh, I know. I can’t wait to see her either. I bet she really likes your new place.”
“She loves it, man. She’s in doggie heaven. She’s always running around with BD,” Luka said.
“That’s Burley’s dog?” asked Juneberry.
“Yup. She goes over to Burley’s with him, and they hang out with the horses.”
Juneberry smiled then suddenly sat up straighter. “Hey, do you think you could take me over to see Mac this evening?”
Luka wasn’t surprised when Juneberry asked about seeing the horse. She’d always loved horses, and she especially loved Mac. Her dream horse was a white Arabian, and while Mac wasn’t an Arabian, he was as close to that as she was going to get right now.
“I don’t see why not,” he said.
“Awesome!” she exclaimed happily, before going back to looking on her phone.
It was a long drive to get home, as it always was. That was the only bad thing about moving into Burley’s place. It was located half an hour from town. It was beautiful and secluded, but hard on the gas, that was for sure.
When he pulled into the driveway, Mindy came bounding up to the car, her fluffy tail wagging. Juneberry got out and instantly began giving the dog plenty of pets and love. Luka shut his door, and was about to start for the house, when he noticed Dove’s car pulling into the driveway of her and Burley’s home. That was nothing unusual, but it looked like she had someone with her.
He stood by his car, while his niece played with his dog, and he watched as Dove’s car came to a stop. Soon after, Aria appeared out of the passenger’s side. That was Aria, right? It sure looked like her. What was she doing back?
He hadn’t forgotten about their time together. How the hell could he? But he honestly didn’t expect to see her ever again. She left the next morning, going back to New York, just like she told him she would. She didn’t even say goodbye. Their time together had been fun but fleeting. She made it more than clear that it was only a fling. And he figured that was all it would ever be…
But now she was back, and why did he find himself feeling suddenly excited?
“Who’s that with Dove?” The feminine voice of his niece snapped him out of his thoughts. She walked to stand beside him, with Mindy at her side.
“Uh, that’s her friend. Aria.”
